  • NJ FamilyCare

    New Jersey covers medically necessary ABA for a child with an autism diagnosis. From age 3 the route in is PerformCare. Managed care runs through Horizon NJ Health, Wellpoint, Aetna Better Health and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.

  • Commercial plans

    New Jersey's autism insurance mandate requires state-regulated plans to cover behavioral therapy. Self-funded employer plans sit outside state law and set their own terms, so ask your HR team which type you have. It is one question and it changes what you are entitled to.

  • Paying privately

    Some families self-fund a focused program or parent training while an authorization is pending. Ask providers what a reduced-hour start looks like rather than assuming it is full time or nothing.

The question that decides everything

Ask your employer whether your health plan is fully insured or self-funded. New Jersey's autism insurance mandate applies to state-regulated, fully insured plans. Self-funded employer plans are governed federally and set their own terms, so the state mandate does not reach them. Many large employers are self-funded. It is one line to HR and it changes what you are entitled to.

NJ FamilyCare

NJ FamilyCare is New Jersey's Medicaid and CHIP program. For a child with an autism diagnosis it covers medically necessary behavioral services. From age 3, access runs through PerformCare, the single point of entry for the Children's System of Care. Managed care is delivered by Horizon NJ Health, Wellpoint, Aetna Better Health of New Jersey and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.

If you are turned down

  • Ask for the denial in writing, with the reason and the policy clause it cites.
  • Most denials at this stage are administrative: a missing diagnosis code, an out-of-date assessment, a provider not in network.
  • You have appeal rights on every route, and the letter must state the deadline. Diary it the day it arrives.

After 21

Support past 21 moves to the Division of Developmental Disabilities. Eligibility is separate from children's services and worth starting well before the birthday.
