3. Ask for a BCBA assessment, not therapy

If your child is covered by NJ FamilyCare, ABA therapy is available through a managed care plan. In Essex County, this includes Horizon NJ Health, Wellpoint, Aetna Better Health, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. For children age 3 and older, you access services through PerformCare. Because Newark holds a large share of the county’s population, NJ FamilyCare is a common funding source in the urban core. Commercial Insurance Plans
New Jersey’s autism insurance mandate requires state-regulated plans to cover ABA therapy. In Essex County, many families in the western suburbs use employer-sponsored plans that are subject to this mandate. However, if your plan is self-funded by a large employer, the terms are set by the employer, not the state. Regardless of your plan type, you do not need to call providers yourself.
